Work and study
For 20 years I worked for CSIRO, initially as managing editor of the science and environment magazine Ecos, and then as a communication advisor for marine and atmospheric research.
I worked with scientists, managers, industry and community groups, the media, research partners and funding agencies to interpret science for a range of audiences. This involved developing print and digital publications including websites, and promotional and educational activities.
Before joining CSIRO I edited Australian Horticulture magazine, Beef Improvement News and Southern Farmer, and was a sub-editor and reporter for the Stock and Land. I also worked as a sub-editor on the Sunday Herald.
As a rural journalist, I loved visiting farms, sales and events: taking pictures and writing stories. I also enjoyed editing and laying out newspapers and magazines. Those were the early days of desktop publishing, and we processed our photographs in a dark room!
